The Popol Wuj (or Popol Vuh) is a sacred text of the K’iche’ Maya people, which tells the Maya creation story, the exploits of the Hero Twins, and the history and genealogies of the K’iche’ people. Originally written by K’iche’ scribes in the 16th century to preserve their history under Spanish rule, the text describes the creation of the world and humans from corn, the heroic journey of the Hero Twins to defeat the Lords of the Underworld, and the settlement of the K’iche’ in the Guatemalan highlands.
