Para as necessidades dos ecossistemas aquáticos, a qualidade da água deve ser boa e os riscos ambientais e sanitários ocorrem quando as águas estão poluídas e se tornam impróprias para utilização. No entanto, a poluição da água no Chade deve-se a actividades humanas (resíduos domésticos, industriais e agrícolas), e também a uma causa natural (composição geológica dos solos, estrume de animais). Esta poluição causa problemas graves ao ecossistema a longo e curto prazo. Os riscos e sintomas a longo prazo dependem da dose e da duração da exposição. As doenças desenvolvidas têm frequentemente uma origem química: envenenamento por chumbo, arsénico, mercúrio, crómio, nitrato, cancros relacionados com hidrocarbonetos ... presentes na água. Os principais riscos de saúde a curto prazo associados à água no Chade são geralmente infecciosos. Provêm da presença de microrganismos. Os efeitos são geralmente leves (perturbações digestivas, micoses) mas podem ser mais importantes (hepatite, leptospirose, febre tifóide, cólera, legionelose...). As várias formas de poluição, poluição industrial, poluição agrícola, lixo, matéria fecal, resíduos biomédicos, actividades humanas são a causa destes problemas, mas não forjam a ineficácia das políticas governamentais.
