Das American Indian Movement (AIM) wurde im Juli 1968 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, gegründet. In dieser Zeit organisierte sich die AIM zu einer Reihe von Beschwerden der indianischen Stadtbevölkerung, insbesondere zu Fragen der Polizeibrutalität und der Rechenschaftspflicht.
