Dieses Buch thematisiert den zeitgeschichtlichen Hintergrund weltpolitischer Ordnungsvorstellungen und einige brisante internationale Konflikte. So wird den Gründen für die auffallende und anhaltende Vermehrung der Nationalstaaten seit über 200 Jahren, den gescheiterten Vorstellungen des sozialistischen Internationalismus und der weit verbreiteten Skepsis über die Möglichkeiten einer dauerhaften Weltfriedensordnung nachgegangen. Das Wiederaufflammen der Frage nach der Schuld am Ersten Weltkrieg, das Wiederaufleben geopolitischen Denkens und die Kollisionen zwischen den Religionsgemeinschaften kommen ebenfalls zur Sprache. Konkret werden einzelne internationale Konflikte näher untersucht: die Rebellion in mehreren arabischen Ländern, die Drohung eines Interventionskrieges gegen den Iran, die indisch-pakistanisch-chinesische Verwicklung in die Auseinandersetzungen in Kaschmir, die Intervention zur Verhinderung der Spaltung Malis.
