É evidente que nas duas últimas décadas do século XX se assistiu a um desenvolvimento altamente promocional na procura de novos materiais, na esperança de substituir os semicondutores inorgânicos. Assim, os polímeros orgânicos parecem ser bons candidatos devido à sua baixa queda, leveza e flexibilidade destes materiais, aliados a propriedades optoelectrónicas interessantes e escaláveis. No entanto, os componentes electrónicos baseados nestes novos materiais são ainda incompetentes em comparação com os componentes optoelectrónicos baseados em materiais inorgânicos. Para melhorar o desempenho dos OLED, o poli (N-vinilcarbazole) (PVK) foi utilizado em estruturas multicamadas em que a camada ativa é um polímero conjugado. A utilização de PVK melhorou a eficiência quântica da eletroluminescência e aumentou o sinal emitido. Foram também desenvolvidas camadas activas formadas pela mistura de PVK com um polímero conjugado luminescente. A utilização de PVK nestes materiais de mistura resultou em OLEDs de melhor desempenho com uma eficiência quântica incomparavelmente mais elevada do que os OLEDs baseados apenas em polímeros conjugados.
