L’estrazione e la lavorazione intensiva del marmo generano enormi quantità di rifiuti. Si stima che circa il 70% di questa preziosa materia prima minerale venga sprecata durante l’estrazione, la lavorazione e la lucidatura. Allo stesso modo, ogni anno l’industria, l’agricoltura e le abitazioni generano grandi quantità di rifiuti polimerici. Si stima che i rifiuti plastici rappresentino oltre il 12% del flusso di rifiuti solidi domestici. A causa delle restrizioni ambientali e della carenza globale di discariche, la gestione dei rifiuti è un obbligo sia per i paesi industrializzati che per quelli in via di sviluppo. È difficile stimare i benefici globali del recupero dei rifiuti per l’ambiente. Pertanto, nuovi approcci che considerano i rifiuti industriali come materie prime alternative sono interessanti, sia dal punto di vista tecnico che economico, per una varietà di applicazioni. In tutto il mondo è cresciuto l’interesse per il recupero delle risorse, il riciclaggio e la protezione delle risorse come parametri chiave di qualsiasi piano di sviluppo sostenibile.
