Praca ta wyjaśnia filozofię sieci pojęciowej (pola znaczeń), a także ewolucję tej sieci w trakcie rozwoju indywidualnego (ontogeneza), rozwoju biologicznego (filogeneza) i ewolucji kulturowej. Zgodnie z proponowaną koncepcją, istota naszego umysłu składa się z sieci pojęciowej, która składa się z ciągłych pojęć mających znaczenie poprzez konotację. Sieć pojęciowa jest epifenomenem sieci neuronowej opartej na dynamicznej strukturze kompleksu neuronów połączonych funkcjonalnie. Język jest zjawiskiem drugorzędnym w stosunku do sieci pojęciowej: słowa języka odpowiadają najlepiej rozróżnialnym pojęciom, a ich znaczenie jest określane przez ich „wyściółkę' pojęciową. Świadomość (własna) pojawiła się w wyniku powtarzającego się autoreferencji, kierowania na siebie sieci neuronowej/pojęciowej, „poznawczego' centrum w ludzkim mózgu. Omówiono również wzajemne relacje między siecią pojęciową a nauką, kulturą i filozofią.
