La théorie de la polarisation sociale suppose que les grandes villes du monde ont tendance à se diviser en deux couches sociales. Toutefois, dans le contexte des États en développement intégrés à la zone économique de la Grande Chine du Sud, une étude empirique de trois villes asiatiques remet en question l’hypothèse de la polarisation sociale et suggère d’autres formes de transformation sociale. Les données sur l’évolution de l’emploi, de la profession et du revenu des ménages à Singapour, Hong Kong et Taipei montrent que les régimes urbains et les politiques sociales mises en place par les États en développement jouent un rôle décisif dans la formation de l’inégalité sociale et des populations urbaines marginales.
