Le 17 avril 1975, en moins de 48 heures, la ville de Phnom-Penh fut vidée de tous ses habitants par des troupes de jeunes paysans armés jusqu?aux dents et répandant la terreur. Portant des bandeaux rouges sang sur le front, leur yeux étaient remplis de leur monstrueuse identité de tueurs sans pitié. Ma mère m?a été enlevée à cause de cette guerre des Khmers rouges. Sa disparition m?a jetée dans une souffrance telle que je suis devenue une morte-vivante. Pol Pot, le chef des Khmers rouges, a éduqués ses soldats avec la haine des gens de la ville qui étaient, selon lui, la cause de leur pauvreté et de leur misère. Moi et ma famille, tout comme le reste de la population Khmer, avons été déporté à la campagne. Le Cambodge a alors été aux prises avec une guerre pendant laquelle les Khmers rouges ont transformé le pays en un immense camp de concentration, un camp de la mort. Les Khmers rouges ont tué les personnes faisant partie de l?élite et s?ensuivit un génocide tuant la plus grande partie de la population Cambodgienne. Le quotidien des camps de concentration consistait en tortures humiliations, exécutions sommaires, famine provoquée, terreur?. Ces camps de concentration ont constitués une des périodes les plus sanglantes de ce pays durant le XXe siècle. J?étais perdue dans cet enfer, continuellement face à face avec la mort. Durant le régime de Pol Pot, des millions de personnes ont perdues la mort en moins de 4 années. La vie des Khmers rouges était basée sur des slogans tels que : Vous devez vous épiez les uns les autres ; Vous garder ne rapporte rien; vous détruire n?est pas une perte ; Mieux vaut tuer un innocent que de garder en vie un ennemi.
