A poem a day may not keep the doctor away but thumbing through the pages of this book from time to time will encourage your heart. Poetry In The Spirit was written by former U.S. Marine Senior Drill Instructor and Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff, John L. Givens III. John will tell you that he never had a poetic bone in his body before the Holy Spirit woke him up one day and said encourage my people through poetry that I will give you in the Spirit. John began to write as the Spirit directed him, sometimes with rhyme and sometimes just an encouraging word or dream.John writes from the experience of being the husband of one wife, Ann Givens of over 36 years in June of 2021, the father of three adult children: Anthony O’Neal, mid 30’s, a Ramsey Solutions youth and young adult personality in Nashville Tennessee; Yvette Henry, mid 30’s, a wife and mother of four and YouTube influencer in Vista California; and John Givens IV (AKA John Givez), late 20’s, an aspiring young Hip Hop Artist in Los Angeles, California. Many of the emotions that are captured in this book are based upon John’s powers of observation and sound biblical understanding, which he acquired from his home Church and the radio air waves around his southern California community. John has been a licensed Minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ since 1993 and currently serves in various capacities in his southern California community.

‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....
