'I write to discover my soul...I read to discoveryours.'The poems you are about to read are written andselected by sixth graders from the Fairfield MiddleSchool in Fairfield, Iowa. These students experimentedwith many types of poems, including tanka, cinquain, haiku, acrostic, bio, concrete, diamante, ocean research, magazine haiku, couplets, title down, color poems, holiday, and limericks. They did a wonderfuljob creating poems that expressed who theyreally are, and I’m proud of their willingness to sharethis part of themselves with others. I hope you enjoyreading their work as much as I have. They should bevery proud of their accomplishments. I am alsothrilled for my students to have this opportunity toshare their poetry with the world!~~~~Ann Gookin,~~6th Grade Language Arts Teacher~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Communication is vital in today’s society. It comes inmany forms these days, from conversing to e-mail.One form of communication is writing, and one formof writing is poetry. Poetry doesn’t seem to get therecognition it deserves in this fast-paced world. It isa form of writing that is personal and demands timeto read it. It needs to be understood or felt by thereader. It can represent self-exploration for theauthor, while it can open feelings in the reader. Thepoem becomes the symbol of communication onmany levels to many people. We hope these poemswill communicate to the readers in some meaningfulway, as they are read. This collection of poetry was created by the 6th gradestudents of Fairfield Middle School. It got startedwhen a fifth grade student brought his poem home tohis mother to read. His poem had been published ina book like this one. His mother is one of our sixthgrade Language Arts/ Reading teachers. She saw it asan exciting project for the sixth graders at FMS. Therest is, as they say... history. This book of poetry communicates to all that take thetime to read it. Those who contributed their workhope you will let their poems communicate to you.The collection of poems in this book started bysharing, and we hope you will share it with others, asyou enjoy it yourself.~~~~Gary Henry,~~FMS Principal

‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular.
