La poesía Zen es una singular forma de expresión de una escuela del budismo mahayana fundada en China por Bodhidharma, vigésimo octavo patriarca en línea desde el Buda, alrededor del año 520. Esta expresión poética alcanzó su momento más floreciente durante la dinastía Tang (siglos VII al X). De China el cultivo de la poesía Zen pasó a Corea y Japón, donde surgieron algunos de sus más relevantes autores. El poeta Zen observa la naturaleza y busca dentro de sí para alcanzar un despertar espiritual que lo conduzca a la Iluminación. Un largo proceso guiado por la negación, y destinado a suprimir el sufrimiento y la ilusión. Lejos de lo que pudiera pensarse, el poema Zen no se detiene en elaboradas teorías doctrinales; todo lo contrario, sus formas breves e intuitivas encuentran en el lenguaje cotidiano, en la experiencia inmediata, incluso en un delicado sentido del humor, su mejor expresión. De todo ello nos da cuenta J. W. Bahk en una Introducción llena de inteligencia y sensibilidad. La Antología incluye autores chinos, coreanos y japoneses desde la época clásica hasta la contemporánea, ofreciendo un panorama único en nuestra lengua.
