Heinrich Heine (1797-1856), escritor alemão de origem judaica, de vida bastante atribulada em decorrência do antissemitismo que sofreu e de outras causas, destacou-se notoriamente na poesia lírico-amorosa, mas também vagou por obscuros meandros passionais, interagindo com o onírico, o soturno e o macabro. Nesta antologia, costurada de variados poemas, evidenciam-se dois traços habituais na obra heiniana, a ironia e a tragicomédia, porém, tingidas de elementos típicos do chamado Romantismo negro, como a melancolia, o pessimismo, a morbidez, o fantasmagórico, o demoníaco, o grotesco e o irracional. Nesses versos, sombrios contos folclóricos, diferentes espíritos e entidades malignas, um caso singular de vampirismo, e até, incrivelmente, aspectos lúgubres de tráfico negreiro – aliás, uma possível inspiração para Castro Alves – são explorados por Heine.Hugo Steiner-Prag (1880-1945), igualmente judeu a Heine, foi um visionário gravurista de litografias, designer gráfico, cenógrafo e educador praguense. Pertenceu ao lendário grupo Jung Prag (Praga Jovem), formado de jovens artistas e escritores interessados por questões místicas e ocultistas, entre eles, os escritores Gustav Meyrink (1868-1932) e Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926), e o ilustrador Richard Teschner (1879-1948). Radicando-se em território alemão, estabeleceu uma multifacetada carreira de prestígio, assumiu destacados postos nos meios acadêmico e editorial, e promoveu a arte do livro, engajando-se na organização de importantes exposições internacionais. Notabilizou-se ao ilustrar O Golem, de Meyrink, um marco gráfico alemão – e um dos alicerces do então emergente Expressionismo –, cuja influência alcançou obras como o filme Nosferatu, de 1922.
