Jakościowe badanie zostało przeprowadzone przy użyciu częściowo ustrukturyzowanych wywiadów z 12 heteroseksualistami o ewangelicko-chrześcijańskim pochodzeniu, którzy zmienili swoje przekonania, postawy i zachowania dotyczące seksualności osób tej samej płci oraz lesbijek i gejów z antygejowskich na pro-gejowskie. Wywiady zostały przeanalizowane przy użyciu kategorialnej analizy treści w celu ujawnienia 10 kluczowych tematów z 11 dodatkowymi podtematami. Holistyczna analiza narracyjna została przeprowadzona w celu ujawnienia dwóch głównych wzorców z wieloma etapami procesu definiującymi strukturę podróży od antygejowskiej do pro-gejowskiej. Kluczowym odkryciem był osobisty kryzys, zazwyczaj niezwiązany z seksualnością osób tej samej płci, poprzedzający zmiany w przekonaniach, postawach i zachowaniach. Kryzys spowodował krytyczną refleksję nad ich wcześniejszymi przekonaniami i założeniami dotyczącymi tego, czego nauczały ich wcześniejsze kościoły ewangelickie. Kryzys i późniejszy rozwój spowodowały również otwartość uczestników na późniejszym etapie ich podróży, aby ponownie przemyśleć swoje moralne stanowisko w sprawie seksualności osób tej samej płci i zakwestionować wcześniejsze założenia dotyczące lesbijek i gejów. Podróże od antygejowskich do pro-gejowskich są teoretyzowane jako procesy konwersji z transformacyjnym uczeniem się.
