I capitoli si alternano dal punto di vista temporale, legando episodi relativi ai primi incontri di Mario e Valentina, la vita quotidiana, prima e dopo il matrimonio, ed il presente. In esso si muovono il cane Poldo, anche lui filosofo, la zia Filippa e la bidella Giuditta, entrambe regine indiscusse dei fornelli ed Elena, volontaria in Brasile ed amica fraterna di Valentina. E’ un libro che racconta la vita, sottolineando con ironia i difetti caratteriali e le debolezze di ognuno. Nelle pagine, si ribadisce con forza, il diritto alla felicità che tutti noi abbiamo. Diritto alla felicità che è anche dovere; il dovere di non sprecare la vita che ci è stata donata e che va vissuta per intero. Giorno dopo giorno, con gioia, senza sprechi appunto.
