This book provides a comprehensive analysis of India’s agricultural sector with a strong focus on institutional support and farmer-oriented welfare schemes. It traces the evolution of agriculture from the pre-independence period to modern reforms, explaining how initiatives such as the Green Revolution, technological advancements and policy interventions shaped productivity and rural livelihoods. The book highlights the persistent challenges faced by small and marginal farmers, including rising input costs, low productivity, climate risks and limited access to institutional credit.A key strength of the book is its detailed examination of income-support programs-particularly the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) and Andhra Pradesh’s Rythu Bharosa (later Annadata Sukhibhava). Using extensive secondary data and a field survey of 640 farmers in Guntur district, it analyzes fund utilization patterns, socio-economic impacts and implementation issues. The book ultimately offers valuable insights into how direct income support affects agricultural investment, financial stability and farmer welfare.
