Emily and Jake are fourth graders at Lincoln Elementary. Little did they know that a simple trip to the library on a summer day would lead to adventures they would never forget. In an overlooked part of the library, the kids found a corner closet. Inside, was a mysterious looking machine with a start button on the side. Emily insisted, over Jake’s objections, to step up on a pad in front of the machine and push the button. They screamed as the floor beneath them fell out leaving them falling in total darkness. They landed by a machine that looked exactly like the one in their library. The kids made their way out into the town and discovered they were in a time that slavery still existed. Jake spotted a building with a sign that said 'Lincoln Law Office.' The kids ran across the street and knocked on the door. They were stunned when the door opened and an extremely tall man greeted them. It was really Abe Lincoln, a country lawyer. The kids tried hard to convince him to run for president and end slavery, but Lincoln thought that he would never be elected. He had no confidence and believed his whole life was a failure. Emily and Jake pleaded with Mr. Lincoln and he finally agreed. Emily even added 'Please, Mr. Lincoln, Don’t Give Up!' The kids left thinking they had saved the country from slavery. They returned to the time machine and went home. As they walked out of their home library they saw the librarian reading a newspaper with a huge headline. It read, 'Congress Debates Slavery.' They were shocked and realized that Mr. Lincoln had failed and slavery still existed. They had to go back! Will they make it in time? Can they find a way to again persuade Lincoln that he must run for president and end slavery? Read the book and find out. You can also go with them on the time machine to help Thomas Edison, General Washington, Sybil Ludington, Harriet Tubman, Alexander Graham Bell and the Wright brothers. Join them on all their time traveling adventures!
