Plastic Cars and Plywood Houses is less about plastic cars and plywood houses, and more about other stuff. The book follows the life journey of a blundering, bumbling 'trust fund kid' from private boarding school through middle age. There is quite a bit of allusion to recreational drug consumption and alcohol abuse humorously, but discouragingly depicted. In fact, deadpan humor is the driving force of the book, offering more gags for the dollar than just about anything else in print, and that includes Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde, and James Thurber. With little to no redeeming personal qualities or integrity, our main character is, let’s face it, a social misfit, or an odd fish, if you will. His self-destructive, trust fund fueled, purposeless lifestyle puts him so out of touch with the rest of society that he never even realizes what a putz he really is. Although he suspects something’s amiss, and perfunctorily tries to sort his life out, it’s obvious that he’s clueless, (or in the least won’t admit) that his substance abuse is at the root of it all.
