Al presentarnos las semblanzas apasionantes de trece juristas que dieron forma al mundo legal durante el pasado medio siglo, Pilares de la justicia explora el propósito y las posibilidades que puede encerrar el desarrollo de una vida alrededor del derecho. Algunos de estos juristas fueron jueces de la Suprema Corte de Estados Unidos. Otros eran altos funcionarios del Departamento de Justicia de Estados Unidos que fueron responsables de desplegar la política de derechos civiles durante la década de 1960. Algunos fueron profesores o profesoras en algunas de las escuelas de derecho más sobresalientes del mundo y nutrieron el liberalismo enraizado en la Era de los Derechos Civiles. Otros, juristas de tierras lejanas como Israel o Argentina, impulsaron el crecimiento del movimiento de los derechos humanos que ha asumido en tantos lados la carga de defender los valores liberales. Este conjunto de juristas venía de mundos y trasfondos variados y respaldaba visiones distintas del mundo político. Lo que los une es un profundo y perdurable compromiso con Brown v. Board of Education en su calidad de momento excepcional en la vida del derecho. La sentencia Brown condenó el sistema de castas raciales que prevalecía en Estados Unidos en ese momento y mostró la voluntad de mover montañas, si hacía falta, para garantizar que estábamos a la altura de la mejor versión de nosotros mismos. Al rastrear cómo estos trece juristas usaron Brown como faro orientador de sus esfuerzos a lo largo de cincuenta años, este libro reconstruye la trayectoria épica de la tradición liberal en el derecho.
