Los pigmentos hacen parte de una gama amplia de materiales decorativos, protectores y capas funcionales, por ejemplo acabados, tintas de impresos, capas industriales, pinturas marinas, tintas traficas (utilizadas en carreteras), y pinturas para exterior e interior de casas, entre otros. Los pigmentos para pinturas son polvos finos que se clasifican según sus características, destacándose los pigmentos blancos que cambian de apariencia por absorción selectiva o por dispersión de la luz, entre otras propiedades, siendo el dióxido de titanio (TiO2) el más común. Los pigmentos ferrosos, principalmente el óxido de hierro, presentan buenos efectos de color, proporcionando además propiedades especiales como efectos magnéticos, brillo y resistencia a la corrosión. Debido al poco desarrollo de nuestra región en el campo de los pigmentos, fue conveniente implementar y desarrollar métodos que permitieron obtener polvos cerámicos que presentaran ciertas funcionalidades requeridas. Considerando lo anterior, se vio la necesidad trabajar en el tema de los pigmentos para tratar de aportar desarrollos propios a esta área de conocimiento.
