W celu ustalenia profilu postrzegania i wydajności opieki zdrowotnej jamy ustnej zapewnianej pacjentom na oddziałach intensywnej terapii przez zespoły pielęgniarskie, przeprowadzono badanie obejmujące 402 wywiady kierowane kwestionariuszem. Badana populacja składała się z profesjonalistów pielęgniarskich podzielonych na trzy kategorie szkoleniowe: pielęgniarki, technicy pielęgniarstwa i asystenci pielęgniarstwa, którzy pracują w publicznych i prywatnych instytucjach szpitalnych świadczących usługi na oddziałach intensywnej terapii w mieście Belém-PA. Stomatologia znacznie rozwinęła się w tym obszarze, łącząc odkrycia naukowe z praktycznymi zastosowaniami w dziedzinie profilaktyki i przywracania zdrowia jamy ustnej. Refleksja ta koreluje z badaniami przeprowadzonymi w tym badaniu, które przyniosły wyniki sugerujące, że opieka w zakresie higieny jamy ustnej świadczona pacjentom hospitalizowanym na oddziałach intensywnej terapii jest niewystarczająca i nieodpowiednia oraz że potrzebne są zmiany w obecnie świadczonej opiece, zwłaszcza w środowisku szpitalnym zespołu pielęgniarskiego.
