Ao longo das últimas décadas, vários investigadores envidaram esforços conjuntos para identificar os fatores subjacentes correlacionados com o desempenho no Teste Stroop de Cor e Palavra. Embora esses esforços tenham produzido evidências substanciais para comprovar o desempenho no Teste Stroop de Cor e Palavra com um número considerável de variáveis neurológicas, psicológicas e socioculturais, a área da personalidade e dos estilos de enfrentamento permaneceu indefinida. Os parâmetros de diferença individual poderiam afetar a previsão da resistência à interferência de Stroop. Verificou-se que o traço de abertura e o fator idade previam positivamente a resistência de Stroop à interferência (Stroop RI), em contraste com a previsão negativa retratada pelo desligamento comportamental e estilos de enfrentamento disfuncionais. Inerentemente, os preditores positivos apresentaram alto desempenho no Teste de Cor e Palavra, o que implica uma tendência para estilos cognitivos flexíveis. Em comparação, o baixo desempenho no Teste de Cor e Palavra por parte dos preditores negativos indicou que estes eram mais propensos a estilos cognitivos restritos.
