El texto se acompaña con la introducción de un brillante historiador, Antonio Morales Moya, catedrático de Historia Contemporánea, y tres juicios críticos de literatos coetáneos de Coloma. Uno de ellos, el de Juan de Valera, más crítico que los de Emilia Pardo Bazán y Federico Balart, que, aun criticando su relativo afán moralizador, reconocen su valor literario y su capacidad (propia del naturalismo imperante en parte de Europa) de reflejar la alta sociedad de la época. 10
