Luiz Carlos Prestes era un leader comunista brasiliano. Durante gli anni ’20 partecipò a un movimento contro il governo, chiamato Colonna Prestes, che gli valse il soprannome di 'Il Cavaliere della Speranza'. In un periodo di lotta contro il nazifascismo che cresceva in Brasile, Prestes guidò una rivolta rivoluzionaria comunista che fu repressa dalle forze governative legate a Getúlio. Con l’avvento dello Stato Novo, i comunisti furono arrestati insieme a Prestes, condannato e isolato per 9 anni. Nel 1942, nel mezzo della persecuzione, Jorge Amado scrisse un libro su Prestes, utilizzando una pedagogia rivoluzionaria per organizzare le masse e il partito a favore della rivoluzione.
