PATH OF THORNS

Originally published in 1933, Path of Thorns is a masterpiece of spiritualist historical romance by pioneering author Antônio Lima. Set against the rustic serenity of 17th-century Chaville and the turbulent streets of Paris during the French Reign of Terror, this epic narrative exposes the invisible threads of reincarnation and karmic justice that bind souls across centuries. The story opens in Chaville, where Maurício, a widowed farmer who was once the Duke of Anjou, atones for his role in the historic St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre. After Maurício is brutally murdered, his seven-year-old daughter Catalina-the reincarnation of the ruthless Queen Catherine de Medici-is left gagged and tied to a tree. Rescued by Margarita (Margaret of Valois reborn) and later placed in a Protestant orphanage run by Gaspar Ducos (Gaspar de Coligny reborn), Catalina embarks on a path of profound spiritual restitution. Catalina and Gaspar marry, and their household is blessed with children who are the reincarnated spirits of both their past-life victims and executioners, beginning the slow work of dissolving ancient hatreds. As the decades shift toward the French Revolution, the karmic stage is reset in Paris. Matilde Portier, the beautiful daughter of Margarita and reincarnation of the Countess of Leicester, falls in love with the sensitive poet-journalist Charles Desmoulins (Charles IX reborn). However, Matilde becomes the obsession of Roberto Corday (the Earl of Leicester reborn), a wayward young man of low character. When Matilde rejects his advances, Roberto’s unrequited passion curdles into a thirst for vengeance.Exploiting the love of Charles’s sister, Geni Desmoulins, Roberto tricks her into copying highly compromising political documents from Charles’s desk. Roberto betrays Charles to the tyrannical Robespierre, resulting in Charles’s brutal arrest and imminent death sentence. Roberto further tortures Charles in prison by staging a fake betrayal using a stolen portrait of Matilde, driving the young poet to utter despair. However, divine justice is absolute. Charles’s close friend, the noble Captain Alexandre Ducos (Alexandre Farnese reborn), uses his military influence with Napoleon Bonaparte to secure a last-second pardon from Robespierre, rescuing Charles from the scaffold. Reunited with Matilde, Charles finds peace, while Geni overcomes her misguided infatuation with Roberto and marries Alexandre.Exiled to the countryside by his honorable father Gualtério, Roberto’s unrepentant nature leads him into a scandalous affair with the married Viscountess Estela d’Alençon. In a chilling climax of moral decay, Roberto murders their newborn daughter and attempts to assassinate the doctor who delivered her, only to be slain in a dramatic struggle that balances his ancient spiritual debts.Grounded in Christian Spiritist philosophy, Path of Thorns is an unforgettable story of hope, showing that while the path of transgressors is indeed a road of thorns, the ultimate destiny of every soul is the triumph of love, forgiveness, and light.
