A Primavera Árabe demonstrou que os regimes autoritários da região não estão imunes a colapsos violentos. Os cidadãos oprimidos procuram o estabelecimento de sistemas políticos democráticos para substituir o regime autoritário. No entanto, quando a sociedade está profundamente dividida por clivagens verticais, a democracia liberal baseada na maioria pode não ser uma opção viável. Em vez disso, são necessárias instituições liberais consociacionais que acomodem a diversidade cultural e étnica. O estabelecimento de tais instituições deve andar de mãos dadas com o reconhecimento mútuo das diferenças culturais e a autonomia da política para garantir a sustentabilidade dos sistemas políticos pós-autoritários de partilha de poder. Esta tese toma o caso do Bahrein, um país com uma sociedade profundamente dividida, para demonstrar como o regime autoritário existente pode ser substituído pacificamente por um regime liberal consociacional. Assim, examina as perspetivas do consociacionalismo liberal no Bahrein, aplicando ao país os três conceitos de engenharia institucional, reconhecimento mútuo e autonomia.
