A particle accelerator is a device that uses electromagnetic fields to propel charged particles to high speeds and to contain them in well- defined beams. There are two basic classes of accelerators, known as electrostatic and oscillating field accelerators. Electrostatic and oscillating field accelerators. Electrostatic accelerators use static electric field to accelerate particles. A small - scale examples of this class is the cathode ray tube in an ordinary old television set. Other examples are the cockcrift- Walton generator and the van de graaff generator. The achievable kinetic energy for paricles in these devices is limited by electrical breakdown. Oscillating field and accelerators , on the other hand , use radio frequency electromagnetic fields and ciecumvent the breakdown problem. This class, which was first developed in the 1920‟s, is the basis for all modern accelerator concepts and large scale facilities. Rolf-Wideroe, Gustav Ising, leo Szilard, Donald kerst, and Ernest Lawrence are considered as pioneers of this field , conceiving and building the first operational linear particle accelerators, the betatorn, and the cyclotron.

HOVE MICHEL A VAN / MICHEL A VAN HOVE
This book aims to popularize physics by emphasizing conceptual ideas of physics and their interconnections, while avoiding mathematics entirely. The approach is to explore intriguing topics of daily relevance by asking and discussing questions: thereby the reader can participate in developing answers, which enables a deeper understanding than is achievable with memorization.The...

This reprint includes papers that were presented at the Zimányi School Winter Workshop in 2022. This workshop aimed to summarize the developments of 2022 in high-energy heavy-ion physics with particular attention to the new data emerging from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and SPS. The included papers discuss new results in hydrodyna...

    Héctor L. Mancini / Wenceslao González-Viñas
Materials science has undergone a revolutionary transformation in the past two decades. It is an interdisciplinary field that has grown out of chemistry, physics, biology, and engineering departments. In this book, González-Viñas and Mancini provide an introduction to the field, one that emphasizes a qualitative understanding of the subject, rather than an intensely mathematica...

The equation of state was originally developed for ideal gases, and proved central to the development of early molecular and atomic physics. Increasingly sophisticated equations of state have been developed to take into account molecular interactions, quantization, relativistic effects, etc.Extreme conditions of matter are encountered both in nature and in the laboratory, for e...

Superconductivity occurs when charge carriers form Cooper pairs and enter a single quantum state at a temperature below a threshold. In conventional superconductors, phonons are responsible for pairing, while in HTSCs, the mechanism is controversial. Several theories have been proposed, but no comprehensive theory accounts for all experimental observations. HTS materials have u...
