Cette publication propose une analyse critique des attitudes, des connaissances et des niveaux de participation des membres de la communauté, ainsi que de leur capacité à établir un lien entre la pratique de la circoncision et le VIH/sida. Elle vise à explorer les leviers permettant d’utiliser les cérémonies de circoncision masculine dans la lutte contre l’épidémie de VIH. Toutefois, le succès de ce rituel dans la lutte contre le VIH/sida dépend du mode de pratique, du niveau de connaissances des participants en matière de VIH, du mode de transmission ainsi que du niveau de participation de la communauté. Bien que les cérémonies de circoncision masculine recèlent un fort potentiel de mobilisation et offrent une tribune pour diffuser des messages incitant à un changement de comportement, leur utilisation dans la lutte contre le VIH/sida présente des limites. La circoncision favorise la domination masculine et la volonté de maintenir le statu quo entrave les messages appelant à un changement de comportement.
