Parodontitis ist eine häufige chronische Entzündungserkrankung infektiösen Ursprungs, die zum Abbau des Zahnhalteapparats führt. Unbehandelte Gingivitis kann sich zu Parodontitis entwickeln, was zum Verlust von Bindegewebe und Knochen um die Zähne herum führt. In den Anfängen der Zahnmedizin wurde Parodontitis als Erkrankung der Mundhöhle betrachtet, doch Fortschritte auf diesem Gebiet zeigen, dass parodontale Erreger in den verschiedenen Lebensphasen einer Frau eine größere Rolle spielen. Sie wird mit Veränderungen in der Mundhöhle in Verbindung gebracht, die bei Frauen in der Pubertät, während der Schwangerschaft und in den Wechseljahren auftreten. Diese Veränderungen sind auf die hormonellen Veränderungen in den jeweiligen Lebensphasen zurückzuführen.
