Neste estudo, foi investigada a síntese de zircónia nanoestruturada via sol-gel, com o objetivo de relacionar a influência dos parâmetros de processamento com o tipo e tamanho das fases. O n-propoxido de zircónio foi utilizado como precursor e vários parâmetros foram investigados, tais como pH (utilizando HNO3, CH3COOH e NH4OH), solvente (etanol e n-propanol), temperatura de síntese e tempo e temperatura de tratamento térmico. Os tamanhos das partículas e a polidispersão das dispersões coloidais foram determinados in situ utilizando espalhamento dinâmico de luz. Em meio acético, verificou-se que a maior parte da população estava abaixo de 100 nm. Com a introdução de NaCl, o tamanho máximo das partículas atingiu 71 nm. Para outros meios de reação (HNO3 e sem ácido ou base), o maior tamanho das partículas foi da ordem de micrómetros. A curva de distribuição dos poros em diâmetro mostrou que os pós deveriam apresentar mesoporos menores que 4 nm. Essas características indicam que os pós de zircônia sintetizados podem ser potencialmente utilizados para obter membranas cerâmicas para processos de ultrafiltração.
