'Paris-Berlin' est un cheminement intérieur. Amorcé en amont d’une quête de l’auteur menée par d’abondantes lectures dès son adolescence. Qu’est-ce que l’Allemagne ? Paris , explique Daniel Cohen, dans son avertissement, est demeuré mon guide et ma boussole ; l’Allemagne, par ce qu’elle fut et par ce qu’elle a tiré d’elle-même, est 'devant ma porte comme un grand pays muet' . Écrivant, depuis de longues années, notamment 'Prague de leur fenêtre', Cohen estima nécessaire de lever un interdit qui aboutissait à une contradiction : exclure... et s’exclure ! Il entreprit son voyage en deux temps, très brefs mais très intensément ressentis : à la fin du printemps de 1998 à Berlin ; en Forêt-Noire dix ans plus tard à Noël 2008. Ainsi 'Prague de leur fenêtre', partie gémellaire - en miroir inversé - parut en 2020 ; 'Paris-Berlin' est la seconde étape d’un cycle au long cours.
