O papilomavírus humano (HPV) é um grupo altamente diversificado de vírus, onipresente na natureza, com distribuição mundial. O HPV é transmitido principalmente por contacto sexual. Existem mais de 100 tipos de HPV, dos quais pelo menos 13 causam cancro e também são conhecidos como tipos de alto risco. Dois tipos de HPV (16 e 18) causam 70% dos casos de cancro do colo do útero e lesões pré-cancerosas do colo do útero. O cancro do colo do útero é um dos tipos de cancro mais comuns entre as mulheres. A maioria dos casos de cancro do colo do útero é causada por um vírus chamado papilomavírus humano (HPV). A tipagem do HPV é um fator importante para o diagnóstico do cancro do colo do útero, e os métodos PCR e PFLP são usados para a identificação dos tipos de HPV.
