Os probióticos são normalmente bactérias e outros microrganismos que têm efeitos benéficos na saúde humana e animal. O probiótico é um suplemento alimentar microbiano vivo que afeta beneficamente o animal ou humano hospedeiro, melhorando o equilíbrio microbiano intestinal. No contexto dos seres humanos, também inclui produtos alimentares fermentados, por exemplo, iogurte, coalhada e bactérias liofilizadas, etc. Originalmente, o termo era usado para designar microrganismos que promoviam o crescimento de outros microrganismos, mas agora foi alargado para se referir a microrganismos viáveis que promovem ou apoiam um equilíbrio benéfico da população microbiana autóctone do trato gastrointestinal. Tais organismos não precisam necessariamente de ser habitantes constantes do trato gastrointestinal, mas devem ter um efeito benéfico no estado geral e na saúde do homem e dos animais.
