Tropicália o Panis et Circencis, pubblicato nel 1968, è un concept album perché integra nel suo corpus l’estetica e il linguaggio tropicalista. Con le sue dodici canzoni, dall’inizio alla fine, costituisce una sorta di rituale antropofagico di alto divoramento, in cui le reliquie del Brasile, rappresentate attraverso miti culturali, politici e sociali, rafforzano l’intenzione di suturare il consolidamento del passato, del presente e del futuro della nazione brasiliana. È anche considerato dialogico e polifonico, poiché le voci dissonanti ma collettive, gli arrangiamenti e le composizioni di Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Capinan, Tom Zé, Os Mutantes, Torquato Neto e Rogério Duprat fanno riferimento all’Antropofagismo di Oswald de Andrade, al Cinema Novo di Glauber Rocha, alle espressioni artistiche di Hélio Oiticica e Rubens Gerchman, nonché alla pop art e alla controcultura nazionale e internazionale. Tuttavia, è un album-oggetto che invita lo spettatore ad attivare tutti i sensi, sinesteticamente, perché nella pluralità dell’universo di ogni canzone, c’è qualcosa da leggere, vedere, sentire e possibilmente trasformare, per cui è diventato il manifesto del Movimento d’Avanguardia, le cui ideologie hanno trasformato la MPB.
