Esta obra consuma el sexteto de los libros escritos en español por Saurabh Dube. En primer lugar, el trabajo busca abordar las antropologías e historias como disciplinas de la modernidad, es decir, que en sí mismas insinúan la modernidad, entendiendo estos términos de manera amplia pero crítica y extendiendo estas investigaciones institucionalizadas más allá de las afirmaciones convencionales de que son simplemente disciplinas modernas. En tales discusiones desempeñan un papel clave las exploraciones del autor sobre el historicismo, aunque siempre entre las luces y las sombras de la ilustración. En segundo lugar, se ocupa simultáneamente de sujetos privilegiados y precarios, especialmente en relación con las élites y los dalits. Por último, el libro explora figuras de afecto y privilegio, incluyendo su incorporación en términos y texturas de inmanencia (terrenal) y escolasticismo (moderno). Estas deliberaciones de la afectivo, lo sensual y lo milenario se extienden al trabajo y al mundo de la historiografía radical. Cada uno de estos procedimientos distintos pero superpuestos se involucra, expresa y articula a menudo astutos e incluso misteriosos archivos de la modernidad —y, por supuesto, palimpsestos modernos— que atraviesan significados tácitos, autoridad explícita y sus mezclas pervasivas. En todo esto están en juego esfuerzos que se mantienen con el fin de reflexionar sobre excepcionalismos persistente, analíticas engrandecedoras y rechazos automáticos de las muchas facetas de los escolasticismos modernos que caracterizan los ámbitos académicos y cotidianos.
