O termo 'palavras-sinal' foi proposto por W.A. Hoffmann em relação à poesia civil dos anos 1810 e 1820. As palavras-sinais utilizadas no discurso moderno da canção têm origem no léxico do romance urbano doméstico. Este género é caracterizado pela estabilidade temática e verbal; o tema dominante é o amor, que é revelado por palavras e frases como 'exaustão', 'negativo', 'ardor nos olhos', e outras. A máxima utilização generalizada deste vocabulário nos textos das canções pop modernas é uma compensação pela falta de características estilísticas pronunciadas nos mesmos. A nossa definição sintetizada do fenómeno em questão como um elemento do discurso da canção é a seguinte: PALAVRAS-SIGNALS são sinais léxicos semânticos (temáticos) e emocionais referentes a qualquer parte do discurso e afinando o ouvinte a uma certa percepção do tema reflectida no texto da canção.
