In diesem Buch werden Schritt für Schritt die klassischen Grundsätze und Methoden zur Bestimmung der Paläoumwelt von Ablagerungen oder Sedimentaufschlüssen angewandt. Der einzigartige Ansatz und die Art der Darstellung machen die Prinzipien leicht anwendbar. Es werden die sedimentären Strukturen, Texturmerkmale und morphometrischen Eigenschaften von sieben Aufschlüssen einer Sandsteinformation (Lokoja-Sandstein, Bida-Becken, Nigeria) beobachtet und rekonstruiert, um die Ablagerungsumgebung zu ermitteln. Zu den in diesem Buch angewandten Prinzipien gehören das Walthersche Gesetz der Faziesabfolge (angewandt zur Rekonstruktion der sedimentären Fazies), die statistischen Prinzipien nach Folk und Ward, 1957, Friedman, 1967, Miola und Weiser, 1968, Sahu, 1968, Visher, 1969 und Salley, 1985, und die morphometrischen Prinzipien nach Sneed und Folk, 1958, Lutig, 1962, Dobklins und Folk, 1970 und Stratten, 1973. Außerdem wurden charakteristische Spurenfossilien innerhalb der Formation identifiziert und mit anderen Prinzipien integriert, um die Ablagerungsumgebung zu bestimmen.
