Fridtjof Nansen (1861 - 1930) var en norsk polfarer, oppdager, diplomat og vitenskapsmann. I 1888 ønsket Nansen å utforske det indre av Grønland. Tidligere ekspedisjoner, blant andre Adolf Erik Nordenskiøld hadde forsøkt å gå fra den bebodde vestkysten til den ubebodde østkysten. Nansen bestemte seg i stedet for å gå fra øst mot vest. Forskjellige autoriteter angrep ham for dette, men han trosset advarslene. Etter turen skrev Nansen to bøker; 'På ski over Grønland' (1890) og 'Eskimoliv' (1891). I 'På ski over Grønland' forteller Nansen om turen over Grønland, om forberedelser, utrustning, skiløpingens og skienes historie, eskimoenes levevis, ekspedisjonens vitenskapelige utbytte og Grønlands geologi, topografi og meteorologi. 'På ski over Grønland' ble også oversatt til engelsk og tysk og påvirket skiidrettens utbredelse internasjonalt. Boka innkluderer bilder og tegninger.
