Overtones, a book of temperaments

The hush of a concert hall, the charged expectancy before a note is struck-here, the boundaries between music and the written word dissolve in a series of searching essays that capture the spirit of nineteenth-century music and literature. The author’s acute ear and sharp pen move from the orchestral innovations of Richard Strauss to the mystical depths of Parsifal, from the dramatic power of Verdi to the psychological landscapes of Balzac and Flaubert. Each essay is a vivid encounter, alive with the energy of music criticism and the insight of literary analysis, drawing connections that illuminate both composer and writer in unexpected ways.Engaging with the era’s giants, the narrative delves into the artistry and temperament that shaped their works, offering reflections on Nietzsche’s restless intellect and Turgenev’s subtle emotional palette. The essays do not merely catalogue achievements but evoke the cultural tensions and creative ferment of their time, making palpable the stakes of artistic innovation. Whether dissecting a symphonic movement or tracing the arc of a character’s fate, the prose is both precise and evocative, inviting readers into a world where music and literature shape-and are shaped by-the broader currents of society. This book was out of print for decades and is now republished by Alpha Editions.
