Out of the Ditch in 30: My Paradigm Awakening, Volume 1 by Veronica L. Williams is a powerful account of personal transformation, resilience, recovery, and the determination to turn life experiences into meaningful change. After spending much of her working life as a chemical plant process operator, Veronica faced an unexpected turning point that led her to pursue a new professional path. Following her physician’s advice, she returned to school and became a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor in the State of Texas, a career she continued until her retirement in 2017.Her journey also includes a deeply personal chapter of substance abuse treatment and recovery. Having entered treatment between 1985 and 1989, Veronica went on to celebrate 37 years of recovery on October 1, 2026. Rather than allowing her past to define her, she transformed her experiences into opportunities to serve, educate, mentor, and advocate for others.Throughout her recovery journey, Veronica has accomplished numerous milestones. These include facilitating a Women and Drug Abuse Workshop at the United Nations Conference on Women in Beijing, China, in 1995; receiving prestigious recognition for her bachelor’s degree project on homelessness and the Bread of Life Ministry in Houston; and completing a master’s degree project focused on creating staff-facilitated peer support groups for gang renouncement program candidates within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Her work has also earned recognition from the National Gang and Crime Research Center, including the Milton Trasher Award, and provided opportunities to present workshops at its annual conference in Chicago, Illinois.Following retirement, Veronica founded and continues to operate two nonprofit organizations. One works to help correctional facilities establish gang renouncement programs for men, while the other combines mentoring and re-entry programming for women who are currently or formerly incarcerated for five years or more.At its heart, Out of the Ditch in 30 is about more than overcoming adversity. It is about discovering purpose through recovery, using personal experience to uplift others, and creating a lasting legacy through service and reform.Veronica’s dream is to help reshape criminal justice reform at the state and national levels. Her story reflects the power of perseverance, the importance of second chances, and the impact one person can make when committed to becoming an agent of change.
