Out of the Ark

'Out of the Ark, Or, Creatures Facetious in Cut and Doggerel' is a charming and witty collection of light verse paired with striking illustrations. Compiled and authored by the noted art critic Randall Davies, this volume offers a series of humorous poetic observations-or doggerel-centered on a diverse array of animals. Drawing inspiration from the traditional imagery of the Ark, the work brings together the literary and the visual in a playful exploration of the animal kingdom. Each entry in the collection features a distinctive 'cut' or illustration, providing a visual counterpoint to the facetious and often satirical rhymes. The book serves as a testament to the early 20th-century fascination with combining traditional printing techniques, such as woodcuts, with whimsical modern sensibilities. Readers will find themselves delighted by the clever wordplay and the artistic craftsmanship that defines each page.As a notable example of Davies’ creative output beyond his scholarly art criticism, this work stands as a significant piece of British humor and book design from the interwar period. It remains a delightful discovery for those interested in the history of illustrated verse, animal-themed literature, and the unique artistic voice of Randall Davies. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
