''Our Best Society'' is a play written by American author and playwright, Charles Browne, under the pseudonym ''Artemus Ward''. The play is an adaptation of his earlier work, ''The Potiphar Papers'', a series of satirical essays that poked fun at the upper class and their social customs. The play is divided into four acts and takes place in the homes and social circles of the wealthy elite in New York City during the mid-19th century. It follows the story of Augustus Potiphar, a young man from a modest background who becomes enamored with high society and attempts to climb the social ladder. Along the way, he encounters a cast of characters who embody the excesses and pretensions of the upper class, including debutantes, social climbers, and wealthy businessmen.Through witty dialogue and biting satire, Browne exposes the hypocrisy and superficiality of the social elite, while also highlighting the dangers of blindly pursuing wealth and status. The play is a commentary on the social mores of the time and remains a relevant critique of modern-day society.''Our Best Society'' is a humorous and insightful look at the foibles of the upper class, and a reminder that true happiness and fulfillment cannot be found in material possessions or social status. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world’s literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
