Fondé par Abdalkarim Ibn Djamé’ dont la généalogie remonte à Ibn Abbas, son surnom Alwaddaï s’est étendu à la contrée, puis à la communauté et à l’empire dans son ensemble. La communauté plurielle est composée de diverses tribus. Les appellations Ouaddaï et maba sont devenues synonymes pour regrouper toutes les composantes de l’empire que Jean Claude Zeltner estime être l’espace dans lequel a été taillé le Tchad, le Sultan Youssouf ayant assujetti les empires du Kanem et du Baguirmi qui l’avaient précédé. Pourtant les trois empires sont restés indépendants. L’Ouaddaï qui fait l’objet de cet ouvrage est aujourd’hui une province, ses différentes composantes étant réparties entre d’autres provinces et certains pays voisins du Tchad. L’empire demeure pourtant vivant dans le cœur des ouaddaïens. L’auteur a voulu remonter à travers l’histoire pour reconstituer ce prestigieux empire qui a forcé l’appréciation de Claude Durand et que Largeau a raté d’en nommer le Tchad actuel. L’Ouaddaï n’est pas seulement une province, c’est tout une histoire.
