L’obiettivo del trattamento nel ripristino dei difetti palatali acquisiti è quello di ottenere una funzione e un aspetto normali. Vengono proposte due categorie di trattamento: la riabilitazione protesica convenzionale di un difetto con una protesi otturatoria o la ricostruzione chirurgica del difetto. La protesi otturatoria continua a essere la procedura più comune per la riabilitazione dei pazienti maxillectomizzati. La realizzazione di protesi otturatorie dipende dall’applicazione dei principi protesici di base utilizzati nel trattamento di pazienti senza difetti mascellari. Alcuni principi devono essere modificati a causa del difetto e del carattere e della posizione delle strutture rimanenti. Il difetto, insieme alle strutture rimanenti, deve essere utilizzato per fornire supporto, ritenzione e stabilità alla protesi otturatoria.
