Unter Ototoxizität oder Ototoxikose versteht man den Verlust der Hör- und/oder Gleichgewichtsfunktion, der durch die Schädigung der Zellen der Strukturen des Innenohrs durch chemische Substanzen (Medikamente oder andere Industrieprodukte) verursacht wird. Dieser Funktionsverlust kann teilweise oder vollständig, symmetrisch oder unsymmetrisch, vorübergehend oder dauerhaft sein und hängt von der chemischen Zusammensetzung der Substanz, der Dosis, der Dauer der Exposition und der Art der Verabreichung sowie von individuellen genetischen Merkmalen ab.
