Das wissenschaftliche Ostern ist einer der wichtigsten Feiertage in der jüdischen und christlichen Religion. Das Konzept von Ostern änderte sich jedoch in der Geschichte ständig, abhängig von bestimmten Ereignissen. Im 3. bis 2. Jahrtausend v. Chr. war Ostern ein Frühlingsfest der alten jüdischen nomadischen Viehzuchtstämme, und das Wort 'Pesach' selbst bedeutete ein Sühneopfer (von den erstgeborenen Rindern der Frühlingskalbung). Mit der Eroberung Kanaan-Palästinas durch die alten Juden im 14. bis 13. Jahrhundert v. Chr. und ihrem Übergang zur sesshaften Landwirtschaft wurde das Osterfest mit dem Fest des Erntebeginns - 'mazzot' - verbunden. Im 7. Jahrhundert v. Chr. wurde die Gründung des Passahs dem Gott Jahwe (eigentlich jüdische Priester) zugeschrieben und der Zeit des Auszugs der Juden aus Ägypten zugeschrieben. Nach der endgültigen Niederlage des jüdischen Königreichs durch Rom (1. Jahrhundert v. Chr.) erhielt das Passahfest im Judentum neue Züge, die mit dem Glauben an das Kommen des 'Erlösers' - des Messias - verbunden sind.
