Le ricerche sui materiali a base di cerio hanno sempre attirato l’attenzione della comunità scientifica. Le proprietà intrinseche di questi materiali, come le facili trasformazioni tra gli stati di ossidazione Ce3+ e Ce4+ e la natura acido-base, li rendono candidati speciali nel mondo scientifico. Anche se le applicazioni dei materiali a base di cerio sono enormi (come la catalisi a tre vie, i combustibili solari, il settore biomedico, ecc.), la resa o la selettività sono spesso troppo basse per le applicazioni commerciali. Le strategie per migliorarne le proprietà rientrano solitamente in due categorie. Una è il controllo della sintesi su dimensioni e forma; l’altra è la sostituzione di un altro metallo o ossido di metallo nel reticolo di ossido di cerio, o l’uso di supporti, che producono materiali con proprietà innovative. Combinando entrambe le categorie, la sintesi di materiali a base di ossido di cerio drogato su scala nanometrica è un’opzione promettente. Questo libro sottolinea come le proprietà dell’ossido di cerio siano migliorate utilizzando i due metodi di cui sopra per diverse applicazioni.
