Mahmud II suprimiu os corpos de janízaros, que estavam corrompidos e impediam o progresso do Estado, e começou a instalar um exército de estilo ocidental em 1826. Conseguiu atingir este objetivo, apesar de todos os obstáculos e acusações. O sultão Mahmud II, que queria que as suas novas forças armadas não fossem europeias apenas no que respeita às armas e à organização, mas também no que respeita à aparência, procedeu a uma reforma do vestuário.
