Descobriram que perder o cônjuge pode afetar a saúde mental e física, tipo, causar depressão e stress, e até levar à morte. Ainda não se sabe muito bem se o luto afeta a memória. Este estudo quer saber como o luto afeta a memória em pessoas de 18 a 65 anos. A amostra tinha 30 participantes que perderam o cônjuge e outros que não. A amostra foi pareada por idade, sexo e escolaridade. A amostra enlutada consistiu em 15 participantes que perderam um parceiro ou cônjuge há um mínimo de um ano e um máximo de sete anos. O desempenho da memória foi testado usando o Teste de Memória Verbal. O estudo também controlou os efeitos no desempenho da memória associados à escolaridade, sexo e tempo decorrido desde a perda. Os participantes enlutados mostraram um maior declínio no desempenho da memória do que os participantes não enlutados, e os viúvos tiveram um desempenho pior nos testes do que as viúvas. Este estudo concluiu que a perda de um cônjuge está relacionada a um maior declínio na memória na ausência de depressão, em comparação com aqueles que não sofreram uma perda.
