Orpheus

'Orpheus: Myths of the World' is a masterful and comprehensive anthology that explores the vast landscape of global mythology. Compiled and retold by the celebrated Irish author Padraic Colum, this work provides a sweeping overview of the stories that have shaped human civilizations across time and continents. From the familiar legends of Greece and Rome to the intricate mythologies of Egypt, Babylonia, and Persia, Colum presents these ancient tales with a poetic clarity that honors their oral traditions. The collection extends its reach beyond Western tradition, delving into the folklore of Celtic, Finnish, and Icelandic peoples, as well as the profound spiritual narratives of India, China, and Japan. Readers will also encounter the myths of Polynesia and the great civilizations of the Americas, including the Aztec, Mayan, and Incan cultures. By weaving these diverse threads into a single volume, 'Orpheus: Myths of the World' serves as both an essential reference for comparative mythology and a captivating journey into the universal themes of creation, heroism, and the divine. This collection remains a cornerstone of mythological literature, preserving the imaginative power of humanity’s oldest stories for modern audiences. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
